A Year from Now: What Experts Predicted for 2025
At The AI Summit London 2024, industry leaders gathered to gaze into the near future. While forecasting trends is always a challenge, speakers offered compelling insights into where AI and adjacent fields are heading over the next 12 months.
AI Evolves: From Multimodal to Multi-Agent
Reflecting on the previous year's predictions, one speaker shared: "My prediction last year was multi-modal, and I was very pleased to see that." The conversation then shifted to a new frontier in AI: multi-agent systems. This year, the buzz is around multi-agent systems, where specialised AI agents, each highly skilled at specific tasks, are unified through large language models (LLMs) acting as natural language interfaces. These systems are expected to deliver more nuanced, scalable solutions across industries. One speaker elaborated, saying, "This year, I think what I'm seeing a lot of people speak about is multi-agent systems... being able to have specialised AIs that are often very good at a single task that you then tie together with an LLM to give you a natural language interface."
Generative AI Still Dominates—But It’s Just the Start
Generative AI and LLMs remain at the centre of the conversation. One speaker mentioned, "So, a year from now, are we still going to be talking about generative AI and large language models? I think to a certain extent, yes. I mean, you know, and other things as well." However, many believe we’re only scratching the surface. The future lies in integrating LLMs with knowledge graphs, AI agents, and automation systems to form a holistic AI ecosystem. Another speaker commented, "LLMs are the beginning of something that is very big... there's a nascent sort of AI technology ecosystem that is being built, and probably it's about how to combine all these different things in a way that delivers value to the company."
From Theory to Practice
Several panellists shared how current projects are still in the experimental phase. As one speaker put it, "A lot of the stuff that I'm working on now is theoretical. It's a case of we have a thesis that we think will work, but 12 months from now we'll have had some time to test that thesis." Over the next year, they expect to test their hypotheses, refine their models, and begin to showcase measurable impact. One speaker added, "We already have a couple of movies in production at the studio... with some household names in them. Hopefully in 12 months' time I'll be looking back and saying, well, this movie with X... we were able to figure this out and that succeeded, but we were wrong about this and we've learned and we're moving on."
Back to the Moon and Beyond
In one of the more visionary discussions, speakers highlighted the upcoming Artemis mission, which aims to send humans back to the moon by the end of 2025. "So a year from now, we will be talking about the fact that we are about to actually send humans at the end of next year to the moon again," one expert predicted. They also touched on the importance of international collaboration through the Artemis Accords, and how AI can support large-scale space missions through integrated constellations of autonomous systems. "We're also going to be talking about some additional advancements... developing constellations of missions that can integrate in a way that helps us have a holistic picture of things," shared another speaker.
A Push for Responsible AI and Policy Change
Another area of focus was policy. One speaker expressed hope that in the coming year, meaningful legislation will pass in the U.S. to prevent the weaponisation of AI and promote responsible robotics. "I hope we'll be talking about the bills that we got passed in the U.S. that prohibit weaponisation and that established a model for responsible robotics here," they noted. Trust, regulation, and real-world application will be key to AI’s continued progress.
These predictions paint a picture of a rapidly evolving landscape—where technology, policy, and humanity are increasingly intertwined. As the year unfolds, we’ll be checking in to see how these forecasts play out.
