UK Minister of AI Kanishka Narayan Outlines Bold Vision for Infrastructure, Talent and Robotics at The AI Summit London 2026

Unveils new industry investments and design initiatives as nation prepares for the next phase of AI adoption

LONDON — 11 June 2026 — Today, The AI Summit London attendees heard a forward-looking vision for the future of artificial intelligence from Kanishka Narayan, Minister for AI and Online Safety at the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), who outlined a series of thought-provoking initiatives aimed at ensuring the UK remains at the forefront of AI innovation while delivering tangible benefits for communities, businesses and workers.

Transforming Industrial AI from Pilots to Scale

During his executive presentation, Narayan emphasised that the AI revolution must be shaped not only by technological advancement, but by a distinct approach rooted in public trust, design excellence and societal benefit.

“The central question of AI is not only what the technology can do, but who has agency over it,” said Narayan.

Here are five key takeaways and announcements from Minister Narayan’s executive presentation:

Designing Data Centres Communities Can Be Proud Of

Narayan discussed the importance of community integration within the data centre infrastructure, detailing the critical nature of communal pride and involvement.

"Do we build data centres as non-descript monoliths that our communities are asked to simply tolerate, or do we build infrastructure that communities can be proud to host. Today we choose pride."

Funding the Next Generation of AI Talent & Creators

The Minister also revealed an additional £4 million investment to support the next generation of AI innovators. The funding will expand opportunities for AI scholars in the Spärck programme and help connect emerging talent with start-ups and high-growth companies working at the forefront of AI deployment.

"That funding will support scholars into roles and start-ups where they can help build the frontier of AI deployments."

Launching the Data Centre Design Challenge

Narayan announced a new partnership between DSIT and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) aimed at reimagining the role of data centres within communities. Through a government-backed design competition, architects, engineers and designers will be challenged to create data centre infrastructure that enhances local environments and reflects civic pride.

“Through this partnership with RIBA, we are asking architects, designers and engineers to raise the bar for data centres as they are designed in this country."

Advancing Safe Robotics Adoption Through the Regulation Innovation Office (RIO)

Addressing the growing role of robotics in the workplace, Narayan announced a new collaboration between the Regulation Innovation Office (RIO), industry stakeholders, and the Health and Safety Executive to develop the UK's first dedicated guidance for advanced robotics applications. The initiative aims to provide businesses with greater confidence in deploying robotics safely alongside human workers while supporting innovation across sectors.

"The future of robots in the workplace is about empowering rather than replacing human beings. Thoughtful guidance will give the industry confidence in how they can make sure robotics works safely alongside humanity."

Developing Open Source AI Ecosystem

The minister also announced several initiatives to strengthen the UK’s open-source AI ecosystem, including a new AI builder package worth more than £500 million and 160,000 GPU hours for the country’s leading open-source projects. The plans also include an AI incubator providing practical support from technical experts, dedicated open-source builder teams featuring top UK talent, and a new open-source AI platform developed with 10 UK AI partners, initially focused on advancing voice technology.

“My message to open-source AI builders is simple: if you’re building in the UK, we want to back you. We are here with confidence, expertise, and support. Let’s go build things.”
