Tol is a commercial lawyer specialising in disruptive technology law, intellectual property and data protection, and particularly where those intersect – such as AI, social media, video games and digital platforms. His clients in this space have included TikTok, PlayStation and Meta. He acted as counsel to negotiating panel members in the 2023 SAG-AFTRA/WGA strikes relating to the use of generative AI in the film, TV and video game industry. He has recently spoken on the legal aspects of AI at Leap2024 in Saudi Arabia and ChangeNow2024 in Paris. Before joining the legal profession, he was a police officer specialising in hostage negotiation and riot control, and then an entrepeneur in the automotive and service sectors.
