Richard CorbridgeRichard Corbridge – CDIO – DWP

Through his Lighthouse Initiative, Rich has provided more focused support for AI projects – such as streamlining governance and targeted funding - to realise the promised benefits and impact. He has balanced the transformative promises of Generative AI with the very real concerns of keeping citizen interactions safe and DWP secure. And it's paid off: combining AI solutions, automation and OCR and ML, DWP has processed more than 20m items, saving 2.25m hours of manual processing time – with direct savings of more than £100m.

Furthermore, while many organisations are focused on GenAI proof-of-concepts, DWP have implemented a model that identifies critically vulnerable citizens from millions of pages of incoming mail and routes them to specialist workers to get the support they need fast. This is the first (of several) safe implementations of an LLM in a production service anywhere in UK Government. At DWP, AI is not only saving millions of pounds each year, but it's saving lives, too
